Body contouring in Istanbul for patients from the United States

Practical information for US patients considering body contouring in Istanbul: direct flight options, the cost differential with US private cosmetic surgery, the longer in-Istanbul stay we typically recommend for transatlantic patients, and follow-up at home.

Why US patients consider Istanbul

US private cosmetic surgery pricing is among the highest globally. A standard abdominoplasty in the US ranges typically from $12,000 to $20,000 depending on geography and surgeon, with the highest pricing in the major coastal markets. Larger combined procedures and post-bariatric pathways are substantially higher.

Insurance coverage for body contouring is generally not available in the US, including for post-bariatric patients. Even in cases where partial coverage might apply (panniculectomy for medical indications, in some states), the patient typically still bears a substantial portion of the cost.

For US patients willing to travel, the all-in cost of body contouring in Istanbul — including business-class flights if preferred — is typically 30–50% of the US private price. The trade-off is the longer travel involved and the practicality of remote follow-up.

This is not the right choice for every US patient. The discussion at video consultation includes whether travel is sensible given your specific situation, your home circumstances, and your timeline.

Flights from the US

Direct flights from the US to Istanbul are operated by Turkish Airlines and several US carriers, from major hubs:

  • New York (JFK): Turkish Airlines, American Airlines, Delta. Multiple daily flights, approximately 9–10 hours.
  • Washington DC (IAD): Turkish Airlines daily, approximately 10 hours.
  • Boston (BOS): Turkish Airlines daily, approximately 9 hours.
  • Miami (MIA): Turkish Airlines, approximately 11 hours.
  • Chicago (ORD): Turkish Airlines daily, approximately 11 hours.
  • Atlanta (ATL): Delta and Turkish Airlines, approximately 11 hours.
  • Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW): Turkish Airlines, approximately 12 hours.
  • Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Seattle (SEA): Turkish Airlines, approximately 13–14 hours.

For the west coast (LAX, SFO, SEA), the long-haul flight time is itself a recovery consideration — we generally recommend staying 12–14 days in Istanbul before flying home, rather than the 8–10 days typical for European patients. This is to allow more healing time before the ultra-long-haul return.

Visa and entry

US passport holders need an e-visa for tourist entry to Turkey, obtained online before travel at www.evisa.gov.tr. The e-visa is straightforward, costs approximately $50, and is issued within minutes for tourist purposes. Passport validity must be at least 60 days beyond the planned return.

Specific considerations for US patients

Longer in-Istanbul stay

For US patients, we typically recommend a longer Istanbul stay than for European patients. The reasoning is the return flight: an 8–14 hour transatlantic flight at day 7–8 post-operatively is more demanding than a 4-hour intra-European flight at the same point. Adding 3–5 days of Istanbul recovery before flying significantly reduces the discomfort and the clot risk of the return.

Typical stay recommendations for US patients:

  • Standard abdominoplasty: 11–12 nights total.
  • Combined procedures or post-bariatric pathway: 14 nights total.
  • Smaller standalone procedures (gynecomastia, focused liposuction, labiaplasty): 8–10 nights total.

Follow-up at home

Remote follow-up by WhatsApp and video continues for 12 months after surgery and is included in the surgical fee. The 6-hour time difference between Istanbul and the US east coast (8 hours from west coast) is manageable for asynchronous WhatsApp follow-up and accommodated by scheduling for synchronous video reviews.

For situations needing in-person review at home, options include:

  • Your primary care physician for routine assessment and dressing review.
  • A local plastic surgeon for surgery-specific review. US plastic surgeons vary in their willingness to provide follow-up for overseas cosmetic surgery — some are reasonable about it, some decline. If you have a relationship with a US plastic surgeon, asking them in advance whether they would be willing to provide follow-up is worthwhile.
  • Urgent care or emergency department for acute concerns. This is appropriate care.

Health insurance

US health insurance does not cover elective cosmetic surgery, and does not generally cover follow-up of elective cosmetic surgery performed elsewhere. It does, however, cover treatment of medical complications that arise — for example, if a post-operative infection requires hospital admission in the US, your insurance would generally cover that admission. Specific coverage depends on your insurance plan and pre-existing condition rules.

Travel insurance

Standard travel insurance does not cover elective surgery complications. Specialist medical tourism travel insurance is available from several US providers (Custom Assurance Placements, Global Protective Solutions, and others) and is worth obtaining for the trip.
