Why UK patients travel to Istanbul

The combination of long NHS waiting lists, partial-only coverage of post-bariatric body contouring, and relatively high private cosmetic surgery prices in the UK has made Istanbul one of the most common destinations for UK patients seeking body contouring. The cost saving is meaningful, and direct flights from most UK cities are short.

NHS context: body contouring after major weight loss is theoretically available under specific clinical criteria (BMI within range, weight stable for 12 months, functional impairment from skin redundancy), but in practice access is limited, geographically variable, and often offered only for the abdomen — not for the multi-procedure pathway that most post-bariatric patients need. Most UK post-bariatric patients seeking comprehensive body contouring end up in the private sector or travelling abroad.

UK private body contouring pricing is high by international standards. A standard abdominoplasty is typically £7,500–£10,500 in the UK private sector; in Istanbul it is roughly half. For larger combined procedures the differential widens. After adding flights and accommodation, total cost in Istanbul is typically 50–65% of the equivalent UK private price.

Flights to Istanbul from the UK

Direct flights from the UK to Istanbul Airport (IST) operate from:

  • London Heathrow: Turkish Airlines and British Airways, multiple daily flights, approximately 3 hours 45 minutes.
  • London Gatwick: Turkish Airlines and easyJet seasonally; approximately 4 hours.
  • London Stansted and Luton: Pegasus Airlines (to Sabiha Gökçen, SAW) — usable but SAW is the less convenient airport.
  • Manchester: Turkish Airlines daily.
  • Edinburgh: Turkish Airlines daily.
  • Birmingham: Turkish Airlines several times weekly.
  • Newcastle, Bristol, Cardiff, Belfast: Connecting flights via London or via Amsterdam/Frankfurt.

For body contouring patients, we recommend flying into Istanbul Airport (IST) on both legs of the trip — the additional cost over Sabiha Gökçen budget options is modest and the transfer to Nişantaşı is shorter, which matters post-operatively.

Visa and entry

British passport holders enter Turkey visa-free for tourist stays of up to 90 days. No e-visa is required. Passport validity must be at least 6 months beyond the date of entry.

Follow-up after returning to the UK

Remote follow-up by Doç. Dr. Erdal continues for 12 months after surgery, by WhatsApp with photographs and supplemented by video calls. This is the standard for all international patients and is included in the surgical fee.

For situations that need local in-person review — for example, wound dehiscence, persistent seroma, suspected infection, or routine concerns that benefit from physical examination — UK options include:

  • NHS GP review for general assessment, dressing changes, and basic monitoring. UK GPs will assess and refer where appropriate. They are not obliged to manage post-operative complications of overseas surgery, but in practice many will. Some private GPs also accept overseas-surgery follow-up.
  • NHS A&E for urgent or emergency presentations (severe pain, suspected infection with fever, suspected DVT or pulmonary embolism). This is appropriate care for genuine emergencies.
  • Private plastic surgery consultation for cosmetic-related concerns where NHS routes are not suitable. We can recommend UK plastic surgeons known to be reasonable about overseas-surgery follow-up, by region.

It is worth being aware that some UK clinicians have strong views about overseas cosmetic surgery, and the conversation in primary care is occasionally less welcoming than it could be. The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) has issued guidance on managing patients returning from overseas surgery. NHS care for complications is provided in the same way it would be for any patient, regardless of where the original surgery took place.

Travel insurance

Standard UK travel insurance does not cover complications of elective surgery overseas. Specialist medical tourism travel insurance is available from a small number of UK providers and worth considering for the trip.

EHIC or GHIC cards no longer apply for elective surgery, though they remain useful for unrelated medical needs while travelling.
