The composite picture
The patient most likely to have a complication-free recovery and a result that meets their expectations typically has:
- Stable weight for at least 6 months, ideally 12+, within a 2–3 kg fluctuation
- BMI below 30 — every additional unit of BMI above 30 progressively raises complication rates
- Non-smoker — never-smokers do best; former smokers (quit >1 year) approximate this group
- Well-controlled chronic conditions if any (diabetes HbA1c <7%, hypertension controlled, no untreated obstructive sleep apnoea)
- Realistic expectations, including understanding of permanent scars and the recovery period
- Adequate social support for the recovery period — help at home for 1–2 weeks for major procedures
- Adequate financial buffer — body contouring complications can require return procedures or extended care; budget should accommodate this
Very few patients meet every criterion ideally. Most patients are appropriate candidates with one or two areas requiring optimisation before surgery. The decision is rarely "yes or no" — it is more often "yes after the following adjustments". Discuss your specific situation →
